Another of the Jolly Pumpkin single bottles my wife picked up for me last weekend. This one is a Belgian Golden Strong, barrel aged.

Appearance: pours a slightly cloudy golden color with a finger or so of white foam. Foam lasts forever, leaves behind ridiculous sticky lacing.

Aroma: classic Belgian stuff right there - spicy and citrusy (specifically lemon) aromas from the yeast dominate. I don't really get any hops, and no real malt contribution, either.

Flavor: wow, another delicious offering. Excellent blend of Belgian esters that follow the nose; lots of nice peppery presence, some citrusy fruitiness, a hint of oakiness, some reserved tartness. A little sweet up front with a nicely dry finish.

Mouthfeel: a little on the light side, which is nice considering that this in an 8% ABV beer. Carbonation level is rather high, which is fitting for the style. Rather drinkable, especially considering that ABV.

Overall: this is two excellent beers in two tries for me in regards to Jolly Pumpkin offerings. I love a good Belgian... and this is a good Belgian. I like how the fruity character is different (the citrus) as opposed to what I expect from some of the classic examples (i.e. Duvel is very much about pear), but the beer has a ton in common with those, all the same. The tartness is a nice added layer... overall, just an excellent beer.
