OK, I knew it was going to happen sometime. I don't run a lab with perfect air flow. Still, it hurt to see WLP002 succumb. I've had a problem with my 20+ year old refrigerator and the compressor finally bit the dust. The yeast have been at temperatures that are not ideal for a couple of weeks. The caps on some were bulging. I propagate the yeast every 3 months or so. I had just started with 001 and that went fine. When the 002 didn't start to flocculate at 12 hours I began to get concerned. At 24 hours it just didn't look right. When I looked at 28 hours it didn't look right and it smelled like my bread sourdough starter when I haven't fed it in too long. Yuck. Guess I need to look into using the microscope I've got here some time. The new refrigerator should help too.

Bummer.  At least it wasn't the blessed 037!  :D

At least with English strains you can usually just look at them to tell if they're growing properly. The first time I ever tried rinsing yeast after a batch it was with WLP007 and somewhere along the way I screwed up (I think I waited too long).

I could tell something was amiss the following morning when I didn't see the tell-tale snowflakes in the starter. Fortunately, I had enough time to run down to the LHBS and pick up another vial and do another starter.

Major bummer. Hopefully it's all stuff that you can buy commercially.

I only have a few yeasts I keep, as slurries: 1968, WLP004, Bell's, whatever is the flavor of the month (1332), and random Belgian dregs in starter wort. The problem I have is not re-propagating despite my best intentions to do so. It's not even that hard to dump the yeast layer into a fresh jar of starter wort. Yet I end up throwing out a lot of yeast. I was really sad to lose WLP076 (Old Sonoma aka the Mendocino yeast and originally the New Albion strain).

Thirteen strains at present. I'm up to 005 at the moment and the new refrigerator is in place. Woo Hoo.

Yes, 002 is fairly easy to replace.

Great news here. Brew pub opening 2 blocks up the street.

Damned Brits are dropping like flies. RIP 005. You KNOW you've got a problem when there is no krausen by 12 hours. Smells rancid at 16 hours out.
