I've been whining for who knows how long that the Augustiner Lager strain isn't available to homebrewers, but seems to be the clear favorite amongst American Craft lager producers.

Well, I got to looking at Wyeast Private Collection 2352 Munich Lager II and it looks exactly like Augustiner, and comes from a Munich brewery (Augustiner is in Munich) and the styles listed are the styles Augustiner is famous for.

A reputable poster on the AHA forum says it's supposed to be Augustiner as well as one other post I found. Since this is a PC strain and it's time is up soon I scrounged around the intertubes and found someone selling it with a reasonable price for shipping and ordered it.

I'm going to give it a roll in my Vienna next to WY2001.

If you like Devil's Backbone Vienna and want to make a clone, this is the yeast to get. And if you are a Munich Helles brewer you might want to give it a shot since their helles is one of the more popular ones.

Anyway, interested to see how this turns out.

Devil's Backbone is pretty much delicious (thanks, Greg).

Of course, I'm always up for new yeast...

Isn't that also what Oskar Blues uses in Yella?

I think so Matt.

It's super popular with craft brewers making lagers.

It's funny that some of the reviews out there don't report very good results. Digging through them, you think it's because they didn't do very good yeast handling? Under pitching maybe? Poor temps?

I'm not sure. I read the same things and bought it anyway.

I guess we'll see.

I think it might be that it's maltier than the usual lager strains and they didn't account for that. Could also be under pitching. I'm going to use it side by side with 2001, and see what happens.

Dan,

Looks a lot like the profile for WLP838 as well.

Mr. Malty says WLP838 equivalent is WY2308.

WLP860 is a platinum strain that many think is Augustiner. The specs are off, but White Labs lager specs are weird anyway.
