I'm certainly no discerning IPA guy. Let's see...

Little Sumpin Sumpin (Lagunitas) has to be on the list.
I really enjoyed Jai Alai (Cigar City).
Torpedo (Sierra Nevada) surprised me at how good it was... especially being less than $2 a bottle at the grocery store.
I think that local Trim Tab does a nice IPA.

Don't know if that helps or not.

west coast confirmed.

I like all malt up to about 7% or so, but if you are going to 8+ definitely add some sugar. In which case I'd use something like kidmoxie's grist.

I love west coast, as well as what is becoming the new "northeast style" - at least thats what I thought of them when I was there. Bissell Brothers "Substance". Heady Topper, Sip of Sunshine - those are some of my favorite IPA styles as of late. I'd encourage you to look into them as well - they're exceptionally fresh tasting.

Dude, 30 ibus of anything at 60m/fwh, 20ibus of Galaxy at 20m, then take everything you have left of mosaic, Amarillo, Galaxy, and split in half. Half goes in for /15-20m hopstand before chilling, the rest as dryhops.

As for what dan says, I do think mosaic is great as a dryhop, but it might not be as good in the boil (not bad at all) a bit of a bully hop, but not a doubt it'll work nicely matched with galaxy. Loving.my galaxy APA.

And yeah... Amarillo isn't great boiled.

I should really do more with whirlpool. You'd think my BU Amber Ale would have encouraged me more.

I think im still scared of fruit flies. I hate those fuckers. I keep forgetting to put my tap covers on and they get in there. First pour (well, 2oz or so) of the night from each tap needs to be dumped.

This IPA i have would be better if i had used less crystal. Its just too sweet with the hops, especially for the gravity (7.3%). In the future i'd cut most of the cyrstal and maybe consider a touch of sugar.

This IPA is good. Really good. The hoppiness is sublime, despite using no whirlpool or dry hops. That being said, a 2 minute addition is close-ish to a whirlpool imo. A side by side with a 1-2 min addition and a whirlpool would be interesting to see.

I can't find it right now, but somewhere there's a scholarly article comparing short whirlpool hops to long whirlpool and then adding a dry hop. The long whirlpool was found to have more oil than the short whirlpool and the short whirlpool more oil than the all kettle addition beer.

Makes sense, if the whole "volatiles burn off" that we've heard about it true.

Just for grins, I started banging together a recipe in BeerSmith.

I put in a half ounce of Mosaic for FWH - 18 IBU.
I then put in an ounce of Galaxy @ 10 min - 14.3 IBU. So far, so good.

I then started the flameout/whirlpool stuff. This tells me that Beersmith is really wonky for whirlpool calculations.

If I tell it that I'm whirlpooling for 20 minutes, 3 ounces of Galaxy, 3 ounces of Amarillo, and 1.5 ounces of mosaic gets me to a whopping 103.2 IBU for this beer. I'm seriously getting 71 IBUs from whirlpooling? That seems... extreme.

At any rate, I'm currently looking at 16.5 ounces of hops in a six gallon batch. This feels like insanity to me. Am I not overdoing it?

BeerSmith's whirlpool calculations always seemed off to me as well. Maybe try out the Brewer's Friend recipe builder and see what they say you'll get from the whirlpool?

Brewer's friend doesn't have a default. It just let's you put a utilization in that you like. I think you can change it in beersmith to your liking as well.

I usually use 5% for my whirlpool hops above 170F. But that's still a guess. I feel like sometimes it's over that and sometimes it's under.

I think a BYO article a long time ago said 10% was a good starting point. I saw yesterday on probrewer that some pro's were using 12%. Larger volumes have higher utilization though.

Long story short, it's a bit of a crap shoot, IMO. With that level of hops, you could probably get away with just the 20m and whirlpool hopping, if not just the whirlpool.

I think this is where the whole iso-cohumulone is more soluble thing starts to make a big difference. If you use high cohumulone hops in the whirlpool you'll have higher bitterness, and maybe a higher % utilization would be better.

http://beersmith.com/blog/2013/11/26/beersmith-2-2-desktop-released/

Says "half the IBU of a similarly timed boil addition" but can be adjusted.

One other thing you can do is to add a charge for 10 minutes at flameout and whirlpool, then turn on your chiller and drop the temp to 170F and add a second addition and whirlpool for another 10 minutes. I've really liked the beers I've tried this with.

A pound in 6gal is excessive.... Sounds great!

Tbh, you could probably lower it a bit. 12-13oz should do it.
