About to brew a Munich Dunkel with the following grain bill:

Weyermann Munich II - 10# 12 oz
Carapils - 4 oz

The hassle here is meeting the color guidelines. I'm planning to decoct and use a 90 minute boil in order to gain a little color. Any other suggestions out there?

I know this will be an unpopular opinion, but you shouldn't be gaining color from your decoction beyond what you gain from boil off.

At the very least you shouldn't be gaining significant color from decoction.

Long boiling won't gain you much color either other than concentrating the wort.

Would a touch of black patent be that noticeable?

I dont usually care too awful much about color in my beers, but to be perfectly honest, thats because i mostly brew pale ales and stuff.

I'm trying to get by with all Munich II. I would even be amenable to dropping the carapils if someone thought it wasn't needed.

Fair enough.

I think ive only ever decocted one beer, and that was ages ago. Just not something i usually do, and color isnt something i stress over too much :(

Just add like 2 oz Blackprinz. Take it from me: all Munich + decoction won't get you the color you're looking for.

Drop the carapils, won't do anything for you imo. If you add any cara malts, make it caramunich2. 6 to 8 oz. It'll probably still be lighter than you think, but it'll be appropriate for the style I believe. I know the srm differences between the weyermann caramunich1-3 is not huge, but I get a little  roastiness out of the 3, so I don't think it's appropriate. 

I know the science behind the decoction says you really shouldn't get any more color than just a straight boil does, but I really do feel like it does make it a bit darker (i'll admit it is just a feeling though). Try the decoction, I kind of think they're fun. 

If you're really concerned about the color, use some carafa special (the dehusked stuff) but only a few ounces. I think it's too easy to make it too dark though.

Yeah, even an ounce or two of carafa III will make a big difference in color.

How can a beer colour be wrong when you brew it with 100% of the right malt? But yes, even with decoction it will be on the light side. You can boil the thick mash for about 20-25 minutes.
A touch of dehusked, debittered Black malt (Carafra Spezial) is appropriate, you may even make a cold extract of that instead of mashing it.
No Carapils.

(the industrial way is to brew a Helles an colour it with Sinamar)
(keep your IBU's low)

Great. Sounds like a plan. I'll add Black malt and shorten the boil back to 60 minutes. Drop the Carapils.
