Looking for the mash to clear up is just as reliable though, IMO.Posted 34 days ago.
I was kind of looking for that yesterday (mash clearing), but it was trickier than i remember it. The layer of 'foam' no top sort of obscured everything, and disturbing it at all clouded it back up again it seemed.
Once i started to vorlouf it sure cleared up pretty nicely, though.

Yeah, ive definitely seen that in the past.
Yesterday there was just too much of the clear foamy bubbles on top to see decently.

You can try to look at the liquid layer on top of the mash with a ladle, but I find it easier to run off wort to look at it. Even when the wort is cloudy, there is a different character to starchy wort vs converted wort with particles. Next brew day, start running out a pint of wort every 5 minutes after dough-in and you will see the change. Or you can just mash overnight..,

I blow the bubbles away. Doesn't disturb it much so you can still see the clarity.

It was probably a bit too thick of a layer to blow away. I had just stirred pretty vigorously ~20 minutes before.
