Belgium Beer Haul

Just got back from a week in Belgium at the European Beer Bloggers Conference (planning a post about it later). A buddy of mine lent me a bunch of those Bruery 750ml 3 bottle shippers so I managed a pretty nice haul! Here's what I got:
Also got to try some Cantillon Faro and a bunch of their unblended Lambic at various ages. Gonna need a beer vacation after this! :)

I'm in stunned silence that you flew a Cuvee Renee back with you. :P

Or is that the special blend or whatever that's from some magical foeder they have?

The regular one doesn't look like that, and the one I had was super acetic and not very good. That special blend might be awesome.

Yeah, special blend. From 2010. Drank a ton while I was at the conference, it's pretty excellent.

I'd be interested to try it. I see they only produced 15,000 bottles worldwide. I wonder if any will make it to GA, we get their regular stuff and it sits on the shelf.

But then again, I bought Tilquin Gueuze and Marriage Parfait off the shelf for $6 a bottle for years and now it disappears as soon as it's put out.

I should look at the dates on the bottles of 'expensive stuff' at the local store. They dont get much, and i doubt any of it is really world class...

i bought a helles doppelbock the other day that was from a year and a half ago though, heheh.

I remember when you used to be able to buy Cantillon here ...

How was the Faro?

The Faro was like a candy soda Geuze--interesting, but not really my cup of tea (way too sweat).

I had Lindemans faro a long time ago when I was first getting into sours and I remember liking it a lot. But I think I like more sweetness in my sours than a lot of people. I mean, I like them dry too, but having an actual sweet/tart balance is awesome.

Actually, many Belgians drink their Lambieks with a sugarcube. IMHO on your side of the pond there (currently) is way to much emphasis on acidity in sours and too little on the esterification and all the other things the bugs do, think of "Berliners" without Brett. Regarding the sweet sour balance, for me nothing beats a freshly and well blended  Flemish BrownRed.

I was surprised that I wasn't a huge fan of any of the Flemish Brown/Red's (that's also what the brewmasters called them) I tried over there. Most were like liquid Tootsie Rolls, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but again, a bit too sweet for my tastes.
