Here's a new one for me.  Had five gallons of Maris Otter and Centennial SMaSH fermenting, moved it to my temperature controlled chest freezer to crash, and was too lazy to replace the blow off setup with an airlock.  I just moved everything into the chest freezer.  Went out of town for a few days.  Came back today to find the temperature change cause far more suck-back than I anticipated and it must have sucked in about a liter of Star San (wasn't expecting any of it to be sucked it).  I currently don't plan on drinking it anymore, but I am curious to know what you guys think about this situation.  If the taste was still good, would any of you still proceed to bottle/keg it, regardless of the addition of the Star San?

Planning on rebrewing this Tuesday morning.

1 liter in a 5 gallon batch is about 5% of the total volume. It's definitely safe to drink, and I don't think the flavor is going to be terribly off. It might not be a contest winner, but it should still be fine to drink.

Have you given it a taste yet?

I'd drink it, no doubt.  I recall one of the guys from 5 Star drinking the stuff straight (i.e. undiluted) to no ill effect.

I think the only danger you get from that much star san would be dilution of the beer... so you should be fine.

No Olan. you can drink it properly diluted, but not straight concentrate... that is like 50% phosphoric acid and would be pretty unhealthy I am afraid.

Hah!  Maybe it was a glass of straight (diluted) stuff.  Considering what undiluted starsan did to my kettle after spilling inside of it and sitting there a few weeks, I suppose drinking it undiluted is a bad idea.

Right, but OP, I assume the solution that was sucked in was diluted, right? So now it's like... double diluted and should be safe to drink.

I really doubt he had a blowoff in straight star-san syrup.

Thanks for the replies!  I ONLY use pure star san!  Ha ha, yeah right.
I have been slightly hesitant to taste it, but will give it a try and report back.  Still brewing tomorrow morning, but based on what you all said, maybe I'll hang on to this if the taste isn't too terrible.

I'd have to taste it before I drank it.

I know ive consumed a lot of star san over the years and I've tasted it diluted a few times so I know what it tastes like. I suspect it will taste fine. I can't taste the star san when I spray my sample cup and taste really small amounts of starter wort, and that would seem to me.to be similar or even higher concentration than OP.
