>No one that matters. You're not winning hoppy category with a  beer brewed 4 months ahead of time.

Maybe so.  But I'm also hearing how we haven't given enough time for Wee Heavies.  The idea was one ingredient list for all, and people have already brewed; Greg has brewed all three of his beers (though if I know him, he'll rebrew each once or twice).  Changing something as fundamental as the ingredient list would not be fair at this point.

The best extract equivalent we could do.  Do you really think that pils extract is an exact swap for mashing pils at 148?

My Wee will have 6 weeks in the fridge......

Hope those unmalted toasted oats help it.

Whiskey Yeast too.

No, but it is an exact swap for mashing pils (and 2% carapils) at some unknown temp, boiling it under negative pressure to evaporate it to a syrup, then reconstituting it as wort.

There are no process equivalents to turn flaked wheat into malted wheat.

If you're going to dig your heels in here, you need to stop responding to the criticism. The criticism is valid, you just need to say "Sorry, the rules are already set" and let that be that. You can say "yes, we see how that could be seen as an oversight, we maybe should have done it differently, but unfortunately, we can't change it now." Trying to defend unfortunate/bad/short-sighted decisions just doesn't get you anywhere, especially with detractors.

Not a detractor. Just someone who has an interesting idea that WON'T WORK with flaked wheat.

I'm not trying to defend, Dan.  It is what it is.  We did our best to come up with a set of ingredients and extract equivalents.  We recognize that they are not perfect swaps - as you point out, extract does/likely does contain carapils, which is not an allowed ingredient.  Cest la vie.

But this is what the ingredient list is.  As I have stated more than once, changing such a fundamental piece at this point, when people have already begun brewing, would be unfair.  It's not going to happen.  Criticize away, we can talk about how to make things better for next year.  But this list is the list, it's not changing.

No problem, Ray.  Sorry to stifle your creativity, as we are obviously looking to encourage just that.  But this time around, these are the ingredients.

Quick reply here for housekeeping, the site "lost the thread", so to speak.  Need to look at the logs as to why.

Sorry Ray, didn't mean to paint you in a negative light, just the best wort I could think to use there.

Olan, what I'm saying is that the list is the subject of great criticism and now great consternation. Stop defending it. The more you defend it, the worse it looks. It's not a perfect list. Stop saying "it wouldn't be fair to change now" or "make delicious experiments" or saying that "we did the best we could" or anything. All you need to say, to me or anyone else that criticizes the rules is "I realize it's not perfect, I'm taking notes of all suggestions to make next years rules as great as they can be. In the meantime, I'm stoked about the enthusiasm we have around the competition this year, and I'm confident the winning beers are going to be very special."

Okay, one final word from me on the subject of the competition ingredients, changing them (or really, changing of any rules outside of clarifications and such):

Guys, I'm incredibly excited to see the level of interest that this competition has garnered.  I believe without a shadow of a doubt that this will become a huge annual event, and a big part of that is from this sort of passion about the hobby.

I am more than happy to answer questions, solicit judge rulings, etc.  I love to see you guys debate and discuss the best (or possible) ways to accomplish certain things within the framework we have provided, and I can't wait to find out what amazing beers the community manages to come up with.

That said - this year's rules are set.  We are not changing the ingredient list.  We are not changing the styles.  We are not changing the entry requirements.

After the 2015 BrewUnited Challenge is over, we will do a complete post mortem both internally (among the judges and organizers) and externally (among the competitors and the community) to fully examine all possible avenues to improve this competition for next year's incarnation.

Thanks again for your participation.  Good luck.
