>Ugh, I have so many complaints with everything.

FTFY.  ;)

I floated El Dorado as one of the available hops, but the thinking was that since it's not as widely available, we would skip it.  In fact, that drove a lot of the thinking for the ingredient list - pick items that were easily available, make the list as "building block friendly" as possible.

Next year, we may add some more off the wall stuff.

>but I don't like Centennial

A-fucking-men.

I swear there is something in that hop that some people can taste, and others cant or something.  I like most citrus hops, but theres something about centennial that is just horrible.

Yeah, the "building block friendly" nature of the list is what irritates me. It's a great list of ingredients to make really mediocre beer for those styles.

The ingredients list should have been formulated to make it challenging to brew for those specific styles, which would require more intentionality to the selection of ingredients and styles.

We almost went with Cascade instead, but it's just so ubiquitous that it felt... boring.  I know, Centennial is ultra common too, but not quite to the Cascade level.

Next year, guys.

Dan, I will personally solicit your input next year.

Of course, I may ignore it... ;)

FTFY, cuz, you know, you ignored it this year. I told you to be intentional with style and ingredient selection before you picked them.

I love you, Dan.  I feel like we *were* pretty intentional about it.   We didn't just pull something out of a hat, after all.  There were discussions, suggestions, substitutions, revisions.  These were not chosen lightly, no matter what you may think.

And what do you mean "Next Year"? I expect the next competition announcement after the results of this one are printed.....

Oh, don't worry.  I feel like this is definitely going to be successful enough to warrant it being an annual event.  We just won't announce the ingredient list right off.  ;)

I don't mean to imply you didn't work on it, just that the building block approach is a flawed way to build a style specific challenge.

I disagree ;-)...

I think this forces you to focus on process as a brewer vs. limiting specifically by recipe. Which to me, sounds like a shit load of fun ;-)

If I may be so bold, please allow me to reference one of our judge coordinators.

Dan, it seems like your frustration is tied to pretty much exactly what we wanted to get away from.  You are allowing the ingredients to be the limiting factor, here, as opposed to thinking about how your process can address those limitations.

None of us feel like mediocre beer is going to be an issue.  We believe that top notch brewers will rise to the occasion and make awesome beer.

You already shared an image of a great range of malt colors that you did at home with pilsner, and you still haven't even officially entered this thing.  I have zero doubts that other will likewise push themselves, and we will end up with great beer in every single style.

Maybe we'll have to agree to disagree.

There will be copious mediocre beer.

I mean, you intentionally left out signature ingredients for almost all of these styles, and the others you forced to include an unneeded and possibly negative ingredient.

I don't see how you can say that the limitations are not going to lower the quality of beer that is made.
