It's called 'What did I brew?'
I went to the brew store last Friday and just threw some ingredients together. I wanted to brew a lighter session beer. I had some hops in my freezer that were leftovers but didn't know how much when I was shopping. This is the first recipe that I have created on my own.
So I just grabbed an ounce of hops at the store. I wanted something a bit citrusy so I went looking for some Citra but they were out of the pellets. Spent some time looking through their fridge and found the last bag of some whole cone Citra hops! =} First time using whole cones.
Anywho here is the recipe. The sample looked really good, very bright and looks like it will be a crystal clear beer. Especially after I finish it with gelatin.
Maris Otter - 9lbs
C120 - 1/2 lbs
Honey malt - 8 oz
Belgian aroma - 4 oz
Carapils - 7 oz
Flaked oats - 7 oz
Mash 150 - 60 min.
11.9g German Magnum - add at 60 min
5.5g Cascade - 20 min left
10.2g Willamette - 10 min left
1 oz Citra - flame out - whole cones
1 Whirfloc Tablet at 15 min left of boil
WLP-005 Yeast
OG- 1.054
Was at 145-146 by the end of the mash. I intended to mash at 154 but I ended up shorting myself. Tried to raise it by adding a bit more hot water but I didn't heat it enough or didn't have enough of it to make even a degree of difference.
Also I had 18g of German Magnum originally.... till I spilled some on my garage floor... I may or may not have picked some of them up. Went ahead and reweighed them after spilling. Probably going to come up with a good name based on this oopsie.
I used my 50' 1/2" immersion chiller and was able to get down to pitching temps within 10-15 min. I had stirred vigorously after adding the Citra hops at flame out and continued stirring while the chiller was running.

Please, you're adding them to the boil. My little boys handle all of the hop additions; invariably, a few pellets get dropped. There's no way I'm going to just toss those, so into the boil they go. As long as they aren't picking up leaves and such, I'm okay.
What did you brew... hmm... an amber or a brown?

That's why I went ahead and picked them up. I know I saved a lot but a lot got away too.
It is a bit darker than I intended. I should have used some C60 and maybe C80 rather than the C120.

Interestingly, you should end up with something like a British bitter - especially since they are all about the American hops these days. I had a bitter that was essentially a SMaSH with all MO and Citra last time I was over there... really interesting beer that sat somewhere between a bitter (it was a bit minerally and nutty) and an American Pale Ale (it had that nice upfront Citra punch, but clearly all late addition and dry hopping).
So maybe a dark American bitter?

I'm hoping it's not too bitter. I went with late hop additions to keep the bitterness down and hopefully to coax some aroma and flavors from the hops.

Yeah ... I'm going with some kind of British Bitter. It also comes across as a kitchen sink beer or a use all the leftover hops/grains beer, so you could call it that if you'd like. Those are sometimes the best beers!

It pretty much was just that. I wanted to get rid of the hops I had. And that is why I've recorded everything I did so that if it was good I could try to repeat it. =} Can't wait to taste it.

Just a thought, I recently found out that for a 5 gallon batch of beer you only need to use half of the whirlfloc tablet for last the 5 minutes of the boil. This was news to me, but I saw someone post it somewhere and checked on midwest supplies and confirmed what they said.
